5StepsArticlePic

2014 is finally here! Many people have made New Year’s Resolutions. Others have made life changes by setting new goals. The New Year is a great time to begin new and to start afresh. But let me share with you an alarming statistic – 40% of everyone who set a goal for the New Year will have given up on it by January 31. By the time Valentine’s Day roll around that number will have increased to 75%. Therefore, very few people who set goals for the New Year will still be pursuing them by the summer. So the purpose of this article is to help you achieve your goals in 2014. I’m going to share with you 5

1. APPRECIATE THE NOW.

Thank [God] in everything [no matter what the circumstances may be, be thankful and give thanks], for this is the will of God for you [who are] in Christ Jesus [the Revealer and Mediator of that will].” 1 Thessalonians 5:18 AMP

The year 2013 may have been a great year for you or it may have been a year of struggle. Either way, thanks God that you’re still here. You have to appreciate your NOW before you can achieve your FUTURE. Many people can’t appreciate where they are right now because they’re constantly comparing themselves to others. They measure their success using the Joneses’ yardstick. Stop trying to keep up with the Joneses! Don’t compare yourself with others. Be your own competitor. Always strive to be better than who you were yesterday.

“Do your own work well, and then you will have something to be proud of. But don’t compare yourself with others.  We each must carry our own load.” Galatians 6:4-5 CEV

2. WRITE DOWN YOUR GOALS.

“Write down the vision; write it clearly on clay tablets so whoever reads it can run to tell others.” Habakkuk 2:2 NCV

Set realistic goals, but make them BIG enough that it will require you to stretch. It’s important that you write down your goals. Statistics show that people who write down their goals achieve them more than those who don’t.

3. DEVELOP A PLAN.

“Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. What is the first thing you will do? Won’t you sit down and figure out how much it will cost and if you have enough money to pay for it?

Otherwise, you will start building the tower, but not be able to finish. Then everyone who sees what is happening will laugh at you. They will say, ‘You started building, but could not finish the job.’” Luke 14:28-30 CEV

Once you’ve written down your goals, you will need to develop a plan of action to accomplish them. Someone once said, “If you fail to plan, then you plan to fail.” It’s very important that you create a plan.

“Young people often think their dreams will just happen. They find out later, after they have sadly wasted many years of their lives, that this is not the case. There is no way any of us can move toward our dreams without a plan.” ~ Dr. Myles Munroe

4. GET INTO ACTION!

“But don’t just listen to God’s Word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves.” James 1:22 NLT

Once you’ve written down your goals and developed your plan, you must implement your plan. The plan doesn’t come alive until you put it into action. A recipe does no good until you get in the kitchen. Put some wheels to your plan and get moving!

5. CONNECT WITH A VISION PARTNER.

“Without good direction, people lose their way; the more wise counsel you follow, the better your chances.” Proverbs 11:14 MSG

It’s important that you find a mentor, friend, or Vision Partner to help you along the way. One of the main reasons people fail at their goals is because they have no one to hold them accountable. Connect with someone you trust, check in with each other, and hold each other accountable for your goals.
