Don’t Throw Seeds in My Backyard!

In Matthew 13:53-58 we read where Jesus went to His hometown. He began teaching at one of the churches, but they really didn’t receive Him. They didn’t receive Jesus, because they knew Him when He was young. They remembered Jesus, so they were shocked and astonished when He began telling them who He really was. The people got offended. Look at what they were saying amongst themselves:

“Where did this Man get this wisdom and these mighty works? Isn’t that the carpenter’s son? You know, Joseph’s boy? Isn’t His mother named Mary? Remember James’ brother? His sisters still live here with us. You remember Jesus? Who is He supposed to be?”

Most people who knew “you” before you started living in righteousness will not receive you. They will treat you the same way. But this is what I want you to see. Notice the people didn’t want to receive who Jesus said that He was. They wanted to put on Jesus what they wanted Him to be. People will put on you what they want you to be also. Don’t exchange your vision for other people’s limitations.

Stop being the product of other people’s seeds. Chew on that for a minute.

Stop being the product or the harvest of other people’s seeds. Stop listening to what everyone says about you.

The haters will always talk.

The jealous will always complain.

The naysayers will always have something to say.

  • “You’re stupid…”
  • “You’ll never amount to anything…”
  • “You’re not good enough…”
  • “You’re not pretty enough…”
  • “You’re not big enough…”

But their words don’t determine who you are. God’s Word determines who you are. What did God say about you? A farmer doesn’t grow seeds that someone else threw in his backyard. Never forget that!

“Listen now, you who know right from wrong, you who hold my teaching inside you: Pay no attention to insults, and when mocked don’t let it get you down.” Isaiah 51:7 MSG

When you’re living your life in righteousness you will face persecution. But don’t let other people’s words hurt you.

People will laugh at you.

They will make fun of you.

Some will even call you crazy.

People will tell you, “It doesn’t take all of that” or “You’re dreaming too big”. And when the gossip starts and the slander come, you have to stand your ground and trust that God will deliver you (Psalm 34:17 & 19).

“You are wonderful, and while everyone watches, You store up blessings for all who honor and trust You. You are their shelter from harmful plots, and you are their protection from vicious gossip.” Psalm 31:19-20 CEV

“You’ll be protected from vicious gossip and live fearless through any catastrophe.” Job 5:21 CEV
