Something Furry Underfoot by Amy L. Peterson

“Something Furry Underfoot” is an eclectic, humorous title which denotes that the book will probably be setup in the same manner. Once I started reading, I found it slightly witty with the usage of metaphors and silly expressive names used in context to share the phenomenon of stray animals having a place to stay in their home. These animals become part of the family, aside from their demanding degrees or careers of the parents (Mark and Amy) with four children already.

Amy L Peterson also clearly expresses tip points throughout the passages. The second tip stuck with me; clearly saying if you take one pet, you will easily take in another animal. So far, I took in a stray who was pregnant with babies of three and only kept one of the babies with the mother (so does this actually count for two? Then this rule would apply; otherwise, I do not plan to take in another). However, nothing like what was stated in the book where there are multiple animals in their household.

Ironically, most of the animals are either exotic or pets that I would not typically want. I don’t know how Amy did it, with a husband who kept bringing pets in and not sure if I would have dealt with it this long. Then they try breeding certain pets they’ve had in their home and realize it is not profitable as expected. I laughed at ferrets being like two year olds, not listening to orders. But the expense illustrated in the book, I see why I never wanted a ferret as a pet. Even to find one can be a difficult task as well as the expense of vet bills.

I agree that it is harder to say good-bye to a pet than hello as aforementioned in one of the tips. I still cry over one of my childhood dogs named Chico.

I would suppose those who are interested in pets, exotic animals, breeding, and a witty furry animal type of book as a pet owner may enjoy this read.

Stay the Course

“Stay the Course” by E.D. Arrington reveals what a young girl’s schooling was like being one of the few Blacks who attended a predominant white school at Kramer High, during a time of segregation and Civil Rights movement. It also takes place in the South. Lori really wanted to go to Snowden High with her peers and friends but because of her excelling grades, was admitted at this school. Despite Mr. Bob’s stories about this place, fear still emerged wildly in this young girl’s soul. Already a scary, terrifying feeling to go to High School after grade school, then to face white students who most likely do not want Negroes at their school…reader gets a grasp of what this experience could be like for a young Black lady and Ma who pushed her to complete it at all odds.

Moreover, it touches on the Black race from when we were called Coloreds to Negroes to Blacks and injustices and prejudices they had to face during the late 50s to early 70s; however, this transition of the Black race, we sadly still have to face injustices and prejudices even in the 21st century. It’s an ongoing battle, where we have to prove and do better than the other race 2xs to 10xs better just to get that job, get that education, and other opportunities. We see some blessings like OWN, Tyler Perry, first Black president, etc. but still see struggles in the Congress and other racial injustices still taking place in this generation.

I would highly recommend this book for students 12-18 to stay encouraged to make it through school/education no matter what and can be a teaching tool used in English/Reading classes to discuss this novel as well.

Disclosure: I am actually reading the eBook copy for Chasing Books, 2nd quarter and speak to the author on the teleconference call (July 2013). I’m also reading the eBook version on Kindle (Android Tablet).

Spell

I was looking forward to reading “Spell” by Janell because I enjoy thrillers especially with an inspirational outlook. There were a few main characters: Donna, Walter, Tracy. Tracy had a mystical side to her. She carried the same womanly trait that her mother had over men. Yet, she desired to be with an estranged pastor. Her fantasies lingered on, like some women do when they long for a man that’s off-limits but oddly believe he’s theirs for the taking. Tracy is willing to do all it takes to get what her heart desires! Donna, a preacher’s kid, she refused to be a pastor’s wife like her mother. Mistakenly, she married the same man she despised. During their separation, she hoped her husband would see his commitments were imbalanced, which seemed to be tied to the church instead of his family. Sometimes I wondered if Donna was a bit over the top but this is a standard problem for ministerial leaders. However, there is a scripture that speaks on how men are to tend to their homes as well as the church (believe it’s in the book of Proverbs but can look at Titus 1:6). Then, there’s Walter. He is the center of attraction because he’s the pastor and filing for a divorce. Later, he defiles his marriage bed.

In the premises of the novel, followed what was to be expected but a spell is bound to happen. Janell creatively links those who tap with conjuring spells, witchcraft, and other tools to connect with the dead are open gateways to the dark world in the spiritual realm. We also forget the “soul ties” or spiritual connections and bonds that happens thru lovemaking even if it’s a one-night affair. Janell ties in not only how the world perceives soul ties but what the Word of God says on it. Therefore, can we erase the sin of infidelity even for the man of cloth. Moreover, be careful who you lay down with. Do you know anything about them before you laid down with them? Yet, some people change before your very eyes and never had a clue even if you thought you knew them or what they were capable of.

Then, another subject matter that’s taboo in the church is hexes or spells that can be put on a person. As Donna speaks to a friend about this topic, easily brushes off the fact that a Christian being demonically possessed, or oppressed; wondering how can such a thing happen to a believer. Therefore, I am ecstatic that this inspirational thriller novel gave insight on demon possessions. I wrote about it in a nonfictional manner. She also covers briefly on deliverance ministry.

Do we take heed to warnings! I cannot wait to read the next book in the Spell series. I’m hooked and will be anticipating the next release.

Seasons in Purdah

Anjuelle Floyd sophomore novel, Seasons of Purdah, Floyd embraces love, friendship, and relationships in a triangular scope. Sahel has deeply cared or loved her two male best friends: Titus and Carl; however, she married Titus. Once she loses her sight, she has past memories that alarms her heart and wishes she’d picked the one she loved, not who her mother felt was best for her. A stranger, James, raises the heat because of the conviction of his health condition versus Sahel reminds him of his past lover that didn’t choose him. It’s like reverse psychology at its best in relationships.

The readers sees the depth of the relationship between the two best friends and did she choose the wrong one but as James suddenly comes into her life, she sees how it happened in reverse and he’s left holding the hurt and pain from a major decision not based on love.If you love romance and psychological aspects coming into play, then you will enjoy this read. Relational readers that can see the connection, the binding forces and factors that untangle, then you will be inspired and heart transpires the most important aspect in relationships–love. Moreover, if you believe in DREAMS and able to see each other realities through each other eyes, then this will be a sweet dream journey read for you.My only issue with the novel was the redundancy with the dream about the Kingdom of Purdah, Sahel’s blindness in relation to her love for Titus, and a few other incidents reiterated throughout the novel from beginning to end.
