Clothes have evolved from the role of being our allied against extreme weather conditions to the role of constructing our exterior appearance. The way we dress denotes how much we care about ourselves and the first story that a complete stranger hears from us is that told by our clothes.

A man claiming to dress well should respect a few golden rules. The first rule is that he must use clothes appropriate to the situation and weather conditions, or else he won’t be able to tackle his activity with full confidence and comfort. This can be best resumed as “form follows function”. Many men tend to leave functionality and comfort behind, at the expense of style and trend. Some situations require this sacrifice, but going to extremes on a regular basis, like completely ignoring weather when choosing the clothes to wear, is something pointless. A man will always look good when he does his job right. Paying attention to his style comes second and adds just a little to his already established image.

The second rule states that the clothes a man wears should always fit him well. Not all men have the ideal body proportions and clothes must serve the purpose of hiding flaws or imperfections that are impossible to change. Colors, patterns, fabrics and accessories well chosen can help a short man look taller, a thin man look fitter and the other way around. It’s all about fooling the eye where to look and where not to.

Whether we like it or not, wearing certain clothes conveys a specific message to the people we come in contact with. A man should know when is appropriate to dress formal and when is time to have a more casual approach. Clothes should fit not only the body, but also the personality of a man. Coherence is the word that best describes the relationship between the way we behave and the clothes we wear.

Respecting this common sense rules can represent a good starting point on the road to construct a personal style, but it is not enough. Every man should know and identify the difference between following trends and developing a style. A man should avoid the extremes of wearing heavily outdated clothes or clothes from the latest fashion trend. Both cases can be interpreted as a desperate begging for attention. A trend comes and goes, while a style you invested in can follow you throughout your entire life. The general idea is to be honest with yourself and wear what makes you happy, not what designers bring to the market and want to sell. Beauty standards are instable, but the general outline never changes. Nobody can claim to reinvent clothing.

To be noted that a style is constructed with patience, attention and knowledge. Gathering information about different fabrics, materials, and taking in balance at the same time the less appreciated maintenance part, can only help in this initiative. A man went shopping should know exactly where to go and what he want. Embracing a personal style means creating a positive routine of regularly renewing certain elements of clothing when they become to wear out, as well as finding new solutions. It is beneficial to stay devoted to certain clothing brands because choosing the right size cease to be a problem. A smart buyer knows to look beyond the etiquette and judge a product not by its price, but by its core objective characteristics.

Talking about them, accessories are a big and essential part of any man’s style. Accessories showcase your attention towards detail and complete the wardrobe. The rule here is all about good taste and moderation. You are not attending a tribal dance, but you are part of a civilized world, so accesories should be less decorative and more practical. A wrist-watch is the perfect example of an accessory that completes a man’s way of dressing. A hat can always boost your appearance and make you look more confident. Not being very commonly used among men nowadays, a hat can pin-point you out of an amorphous crowd and become your trademark item. Shoes are definitely the key point in any man’s way of dressing, and any mistake here is unacceptable.
