Sunday Best 2012 Runner Up Alexis Spight

Alexis Spight has skyrocketed into singing ministry, in an phenomenal way! In the past few months after being crowned the 1st runner up on BET’s highly successful reality television series, Sunday Best. The 19 year old “preacher’s kid” has wowed audiences nationwide with her vocal ability, distinctive style, signature red hair and transparent sincerity.

What a difference a year can make in the life of a person. Just last year Alexis Spight was just your typical teenager, until she heard to call to audition for BET Sunday Best, she went on to make it past the selection rounds. Alexis excelled into the finals. She would go up against power house Joshua Rogers, whom The Certain Ones Radio; also had the opportunity to interview.

Although Alexis didn’t win the coveted title of Sunday Best, she won on so many other levels. She was mentored by the incomparable Kim Burell. Alexis was privileged to sing in front of millions of viewers- and was given constructive criticism from the gospels bests, Pastor Donnie McClurkin, CeCe Winans, and Yolanda Adams.

The Certain Ones: What prompted you to audition for BET’s Sunday Best?

Alexis Spight: “Well I live in Kansas City…my family and my friends definitely encouraged me and pushed me to go ahead and audition when they found out that the auditions were in St. Louis [Missouri] my family and I rallied up, we took the trip to St. Louis. I stood in line and there were a few thousand people ahead of me. I immediately kind of became a little bit discouraged. Because it was like, how are you going to perform things and make any outcome as far as my ministry, there are so many people ahead of me…I wanted to go home. I wanted to quit. But, I persevered.”

The Certain Ones: Looking back on your experience as a contestant on Sunday Best what is one of the most pivotal moments that have affected you the most:

Alexis Spight: “Standing on that long line, with so many people ahead of me. I remembered my little sister. She is eleven years old, and I remember her just telling me, without me even mentioning my feelings at that time, she said ‘Lexie don’t let this discourage you. God’s favor is on you’ although I didn’t win, God has opened up so many doors.

The Certain Ones: What was your source of strength?

Alexis Spight: I was just grateful to God. This audition reminded me that I was one in a million. Surrounded by all those people. I was chosen. I am just God’s promoter trying to show how awesome God really is. It’s an honor. I really am.”

The Certain Ones: When Pastor Donnie McClurkin, CeCe Winans, and Yolanda Adams; sang words of encouragements to you, in that moment what were thinking and feeling?

Alexis Spight: “I kept everything they mention alive. When Yolanda Adams told me I was going to reach people with tattoos. People that wouldn’t be able to reach. Before I audition, a minister stated I wasn’t going to reach…because; I was not the norm in the typical church. When she said that, that was all the confirmation right there. I didn’t have to win. I got confirmation right there. If your heart is geared toward Christ that is all that matters.”
