The American Bible Challenge

Hang on to your seats Bible Scholars, there is a new game in town. “The American Bible Challenge.”  Hosted by comedian Jeff Foxworthy; has made its long anticipated debut Thursday, August 23^rd, on the Game Show Network at 8 p.m.  So far the response has been overwhelmingly positive.  Viewers may be familiar with Jeff Foxworthy as host of the cancelled game show “Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?”

The interesting thing about the game show is that each will be playing to win $20,000 for a charity of their choice and a chance to win a $100,000 grand prize later on in the season. The one-hour show will have teams of families, and church groups showing off their Biblical knowledge

In an interview with the Washington Post, consulting producer Maura Dunbar, was quite enthused and confident that “The American Bible Challenge,”  would be an opportunity not only for people of faith but for the world.”

“I think people of faith will have a very good comfort level, and I think this is an opportunity for all of us to hopefully open up the Bible to new audiences and engagement,” stated Dunbar.

This is refreshing considering all the negative images being played out via reality shows.  Inspirational and or gospel shows to date are few and next to none. “Touched by Angel” struggled in the ratings its first year. The show didn’t reach its peak until the third season, thus becoming one of CBS’s highest-rated series!  It premiered on CBS on September 21, 1994 and ran for 211 episodes and nine seasons until its conclusion on April 27, 2003.

Being an avid reader of the Bible and a woman of faith, I must confess that I am excited about “The American Bible Challenge.”  So, much in fact that I am considering being a contestant on the show myself!
