The Value Test

ValueTestPic

“When you talk, you should always be kind and pleasant so you will be able to answer everyone in the way you should.”

Colossians 4:6 NCV

I remember so clearly one day I was at work at my previous job. The day was going by smoothly, production was great, and everything was going well. Then all of a sudden I heard one of my coworkers say, “Oh crap!” That’s actually the clean version of what she said as she was staring at the parking lot with frustration. What caught her attention was the owner of the business pulling up in his car. He often got this reaction when he came in to work. This is an example of a person who lacks value. My mentor once told me,

“The way you can tell if you’re valuable or not are if people miss you when you’re gone.”

~ Elwood McGhee

Do people miss you when you’re gone or do they celebrate? Are they glad when they see you or do they scream, “Oh crap!”? This is the Value Test.

Some people have leadership positions, but no value.

Some people have money and possessions, but no value.

You may be reading this and asking, “Aren’t we all valuable?” Of course we are! We are all valuable in God’s eyes. Everyone has value in them, but the Value Test will show if you’ve tapped into it or not. A person who’s valuable adds value to other people. If people feel unimportant and unappreciated when they encounter you, that’s not coming from your value; that’s come from something else inside of you – selfishness, pride, jealousy, hate…you name it.

“Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.”

Ephesians 4:29

Everyone is born with a purpose that God has placed in them. And whatever that purpose is, it’s designed to bless others. So here’s another part of the Value Test – If what you’re pursuing only benefits “you”, then you truly haven’t found your purpose. When you’re in your purpose, you add value to others. When you tap into your purpose, others benefit…not just you.

You’ve been going after that position…

You’ve been busy chasing money…

You’ve by trying to gain wealth and possessions…

All because you thought these things made you valuable. The truth is you can have all of these things and still fail the Value Test.

Don’t seek leadership, seek value.

And the doors of opportunity will be opened.

Don’t seek money, seek value.

And money will chase you.

Don’t seek success, seek value.

And you will change the world

Your value is not determined by how much you’ve gained.

Your value is determined by how much you’ve given.
